Ways To Make Money | Spending Money More Exciting Than Crafting It

There are two ways to make money: You can work for it, or if you are the government, you can print it or coin it. A visit to the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia offers a glimpse into the government's version of literally making money.

If you take a tour, prepare to be shocked. It is an overbuilt government building with decreasing reason to exist and does things at great expense.

Visitors watch coins slide down a chute and disappear. Those not overstimulated by this activity should visit a paint factory and watch samples dry.

A coin's life begins as a strip of metal. Pennies used to be copper, dimes and quarters used to be silver. Today those metals are worth more than the coins, so people would melt them down faster than they could be manufactured if the government didn't step in and dilute the purity of the metal. Strengthening the value of the U.S. dollar with rational policies would work just as well.

From the strip of metal, circles are cut out for the basic coin shape. Then the coin is "struck," with 60 tons of pressure to put the image and words on the bare metal. They are then counted and bagged.

By the way, it costs three cents to make a penny. The government is losing money and needs to cut back on spending. I have an idea: STOP MAKING PENNIES!

The mints in Denver, West Point and San Francisco also make coins. There is a secret to know which mint created a coin. If you would like to know which mint created your coins, send them to me. I will examine them and send you a report.
